VARTEL-AM

Hypertension is elevation in the blood pressure which is mediated by Angiotensin which is the pressor agent for the RAAS system which mediates the vasoconstriction, Cardiac stimulation and secretion and release of angiotensin.

Telmisartan belongs to the category of angiotensin receptor blocker. It has greater affinity for AT1 receptor and has lower affinity for AT2 receptor thus lowering blood pressure.

Amlodipine is calcium channel antagonist and belongs to the dihydropyridine class. It lowers the risk of myocardial conduction and cardiac conduction.

  • Hypertension

Mechanism of action-

Telmisartan binds irreversible to the AT1 and AT2 receptors present in the smooth muscles and thus blocks its activity and decreases vascular résistance.

Amlodipine blocks the L-type calcium channels and dilates the peripheral arterioles and decreases peripheral resistance.

Pharmacokinetics-

Telmisartan-
It is absorbed orally
It is 95% bound to plasma proteins
It undergoes glucuronidation
It is excreted via feces

Amlodipine-
It is absorbed orally
It is 98% bound to plasma proteins
It is metabolized in the liver
It is excreted in the urine
  • Swelling in the hands
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Stomach pain
  • Contraindicated in people with known hypersensitivity
  • Simvastatin
  • Cyclosporin
