VECC

Calcium carbonate belongs to inorganic salt which is commonly used antacid. It subsequently increases the pH and thus inhibits the action of pepsin.

It is also used as nutritional supplement to treat hypocalcaemia.

Here gastric-peptic disease occurs due to imbalance in between aggressive and defensive factors. calcium carbonate restores the acid-balance. It exerts cytoprotective action.

  • Acid indigestion
  • Heartburn
  • Hyperphosphatemia

Mechanism of Action-

Calcium works by inhibiting the action of pepsin and increases the release of prostaglandins and bicarbonate ions thus it neutralizes excess of acid by forming carbon dioxide and water.

Pharmacokinetics-

Absorption- It is absorbed orally
Protein Binding- It does not show protein binding
Excretion- It is excreted via feces
