VEDOXIM-CV

This composition consists of cefpodoxime and clavulanate acid which are used in combination to treat bacterial infections here, clavulanate prevents the hydrolysis of cefpodoxime or all other antibiotics and enhance the action of the antibiotics.

Cefpodoxime belongs to the cephalosporin class and it works by fighting with the bacteria. It is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Cefpodoxime proxetil is in the form of prodrug which is de-esterified in the intestine.

Clavulanate belongs to the class of beta-lactamases inhibitors. It is used with antibiotics to prevent resistance caused by the beta-lactamases enzymes produced by the bacteria.

  • Ear infections
  • Skin infections
  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Urinary tract infections

Mechanism of action-

Cefpodoxime inhibits the peptidoglycan which is the component of the bacterial cell wall and is responsible for the crosslinking of NAM and NAG thus causes cell wall lysis.
Clavulanic acid inhibits the beta lactamases enzymes which is responsible for inactivation of the antibiotics.

Pharmacokinetics-

Cefpodoxime-
It is absorbed by gastrointestinal tract
It is 23% bound to serum proteins
It is excreted unchanged in urine

Clavulanic acid-
It is absorbed by oral administration
It is 25% bound to proteins
It is metabolized in the liver
It is excreted unchanged via urine
